Clio Integration

Clio integration connects your firm's practice-management data to August. Search matters and contacts, pull documents into a workspace folder, and link an August project to a Clio matter so matter questions default to the right context.

What This Integration Does

• Search matters and contacts: Ask Assistant to find a matter by name, number, or client, and look up contact details.

• Pull matter context: Ask about a matter's custom fields, activities, calendar entries, tasks, and notes.

• Import documents: Bring documents from a Clio matter into an August workspace folder for analysis, review, and drafting.

• Save documents back to Clio: Upload an August document into a matter's Documents from a chat.

• Link a project to a matter: Connect an August project to one Clio matter so matter-related questions in that project default to it.

Setup Requirements

Clio uses OAuth 2.0 — you connect with your own Clio login, and the integration inherits your existing Clio permissions. No separate admin consent step is required.

How to Connect Clio

Connect the first time you use it, from any of three places: the Integrations menu in the chat composer, the Import menu on a project's folders page, or the matter-linking section of a project's settings.

Importing Documents from Clio

Open Import > Clio from a project's folders page or the composer's Integrations menu.

1. Search for a matter by name, number, or client, or click Browse all files and folders to walk your Clio account from the top level down — the same structure Clio's own Documents page uses.

2. Select a matter or folder to open its contents. Folders and documents load up to 200 items at a time; if there are more, August tells you only the first page is showing.

3. Check the documents you want. File types August can't process appear greyed out and marked unsupported.

4. At the top level, click Next to choose a destination folder in August. Inside a matter or folder, click Import Selected to import directly.

Imported files download one at a time and go through August's standard upload pipeline, so they appear in your workspace and become available for analysis as soon as processing finishes.

Linking a Project to a Clio Matter

From a project's settings, search for a Clio matter and link it. This is a pointer, not a sync — linking doesn't import the matter's documents automatically. Once linked, questions in that project about matter details default to the linked matter's context.

What's Not Yet Supported

• Clio documents don't sync automatically the way connected Google Drive or SharePoint folders do — reopen Import to pull in new files.

• Linking a project to a matter doesn't create a matter in Clio, and importing doesn't write time entries back to Clio.

• There's no "Open in August" action inside Clio itself yet.

Security and Privacy

Clio integration uses OAuth 2.0 authentication:

• No passwords stored: August never receives or stores your Clio password. Authentication tokens are encrypted and managed securely.

• Your own permissions: The connection acts as you — it can only see what your Clio account can see.

• Zero data retention for training: Your documents aren't used to train AI models. See Security and Privacy Overview for details.
