Dropbox integrates with August as a cloud storage connector, enabling document upload and folder sync directly within your workspace. Connect matter folders, use Dropbox as a document source for analysis, and keep files synchronized bi-directionally between Dropbox and August.
What This Integration Does
Once connected, Dropbox becomes a document source for August workflows:
Document upload: Pull files from Dropbox into Assistant queries, Tabular Review, and other workflows.
Folder sync: Connect specific Dropbox folders to maintain synced document sets accessible within August.
Bi-directional sync: Changes flow both ways — documents stay current between Dropbox and your August workspace.
Setup Requirements
Before connecting Dropbox, verify you meet the following requirements:
Subscription tier: Dropbox Professional or Business plan required.
Team folder access: Admin consent required if you need to connect team folders. Personal folders can be connected without admin approval.
Permissions: You must have access to the Dropbox folders you want to connect.
If you need team folder access and are not a Dropbox admin, request admin consent before starting the connection process.
How to Connect Dropbox
The connection uses OAuth 2.0 authentication — your Dropbox password is never stored by August.
Open Integrations
Open Integrations from the left navigation menu in August.
Select Dropbox
Click Dropbox from the available integrations list.
Authorize Access
Click Connect to launch the OAuth 2.0 authorization flow. A secure Dropbox login page opens in a new window. Sign in with your Dropbox credentials and grant August permission to access your files.
Select Folders
After authorization, browse your Dropbox structure and select the specific folders you want to sync with August. Sync begins automatically once folders are selected.
Folder Sync Processing
When you connect Dropbox folders or import archives containing multiple files, August processes the content asynchronously rather than requiring you to wait for immediate completion.
Tracking Sync Status
Large folder imports and archive uploads display processing status in the folders workspace:
In progress: The import appears in your folders view with a status indicator showing extraction or sync progress.
Completed: When processing finishes, all files become available for use in Assistant queries, Tabular Review, and other workflows.
Monitor the status indicator to know when imported content is ready for analysis.
Folder imports containing many files may take several minutes to process. You can navigate away from the folders view while the import continues in the background.
Archive Imports
When uploading archive files (such as ZIP) from Dropbox, August extracts the contents asynchronously. The archive appears in your folders view with extraction status until all files are processed and placed in the target location.
Common Use Cases
Syncing Matter Folders
Connect matter-specific Dropbox folders to August for unified document access. Once synced, files in those folders become available for:
Analysis in Assistant queries.
Multi-document comparison in Tabular Review.
Reference during drafting and clause work.
Using Dropbox as a Document Source
Instead of uploading files manually, pull documents directly from connected Dropbox folders. Use @mentions in Assistant to search and attach files from your synced folders without leaving the chat interface.
Troubleshooting
This typically means admin consent was not granted for team folder access. If you're not a Dropbox admin, ask your Dropbox admin to:
Sign in to the Dropbox admin console.
Navigate to connected apps or integrations.
Approve August for team folder access.
Once approved, disconnect and reconnect Dropbox in August to refresh folder visibility.
If newly added files in Dropbox aren't appearing in August:
Wait a few minutes — sync operates on a periodic schedule rather than instantaneously.
Check that the file is in a folder you've connected to August.
Disconnect and reconnect the Dropbox integration to force a full resync.
If OAuth authorization fails or the connection disconnects:
Ensure you're signing in with the correct Dropbox account.
Verify your Dropbox subscription is still active (Professional or Business).
Clear browser cache and retry the authorization flow.
If using a corporate network, check that OAuth traffic isn't blocked by firewall rules.
Security and Authentication
Dropbox integration uses industry-standard OAuth 2.0:
No password storage: August never sees or stores your Dropbox password.
Encrypted tokens: Authentication tokens are encrypted and managed according to August's Security and Privacy Overview.
Scoped access: August only accesses folders you explicitly select during setup.
Your Dropbox documents remain protected by August's single-tenant architecture and enterprise-grade security. For full details on data protection, see Security and Privacy Overview.
