Using August with Claude (connector)

Use August, the legal AI platform, from inside Claude. The August connector lets Claude work with your August projects, documents, questions and agents, using your own August account and permissions.

What it does

August is a legal AI platform for law firms and in-house legal teams. The connector brings your August workspace into Claude, so you can work with your matters and documents without switching tools.

With August connected, Claude can:

  • List your projects (matters), browse folders, and search the full text of the documents you can access in August.

  • Read a document's text to answer questions, find clauses, and compare agreements.

  • Send a legal question to August and return its answer with citations to the source documents.

  • Find, run and monitor your saved August agents (repeatable workflows such as contract review or document summaries), and organize work with tags and folders.

Claude only sees the projects, folders and documents your August account can already see.

Requirements

  • An active, paid August subscription. Sign up or sign in at app.august.law. If you're part of a firm or legal team, your August admin needs to give you an account.

  • A Claude account that can use connectors (Claude on the web or the Claude desktop app). On Claude Team and Enterprise plans, your organization's settings may control which connectors members can add.

  • No other setup is needed in Claude beyond adding the connector.

How to connect

From the Claude Connectors Directory (once listed)

  1. In Claude (web or desktop), open Customize → Connectors and browse the directory.

  2. Search for August and select it.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. Sign in with your August account on the August sign-in page and approve access.

  5. Back in Claude, August appears as connected. Try one of the example prompts.

As a custom connector (available now)

  1. In Claude (web or desktop), open your connector settings and choose Add custom connector. (On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner may need to add it for the organization first.)

  2. Enter a name, for example August, and this server URL:

  1. Save, then click Connect.

  2. Sign in with your August account and approve access.

  3. In a new chat, make sure August is turned on for that conversation, then try an example prompt.

Menu names in Claude can change over time. If you can't find these options, see Anthropic's help article on connectors.

What Claude can do

Tools that only read data can run without interrupting you. Tools that change data in August ask for your confirmation in Claude before they run.

Reads your August data

  • Projects: list the projects you can access, see a project's root folders, and see who is a member of a project and their permission level.

  • Folders and files: browse folders and subfolders, view a folder tree, find a folder by name, and search file and folder names.

  • Document content: search the full text of documents you can access, read a document's parsed text, and create a short-lived download link for a document.

  • Questions and chats: list your August chats, open a chat and its messages, check the progress of a question, and fetch a finished answer with its citations and any files it produced.

  • Agents: list your saved agents, read an agent's definition, notes, inputs and triggers, and see past runs with their status and output.

  • Skills and tags: list and read skills (reusable instructions for August's agents) and list your tags.

Changes data in August (Claude asks first)

  • Questions and chats: ask August a legal question (this creates a chat and uses your August account), cancel a running question, rename or delete a chat.

  • Projects and folders: create, rename or permanently delete projects; create folders or delete folders along with everything inside them.

  • Tags: create, edit and delete tags, and add or remove tags on documents, chats and agents.

  • Skills: create, copy, edit and delete skills.

  • Agents: create an agent from a description, copy, rename, move or delete agents; edit an agent's definition, notes and default inputs; run an agent, answer a run that is waiting for your input, cancel or delete runs; set or change schedules and automatic triggers (for example, when a file is uploaded or an email arrives); turn an agent's automation on or off.

Some actions reach beyond August itself:

  • Running an agent can email its results, including attached documents, to an address you specify. Check the recipient before you confirm.

  • An email trigger lets an agent run automatically on incoming mail in your connected Outlook mailbox. Only set one up if you intend the agent to process that mail.

  • Deleting projects, folders, chats, agents or runs may be permanent. Review the confirmation in Claude carefully.

Example prompts

  • "Using August, list my projects and show me the documents in the project."

  • "In my project, find the confidentiality clause in the NDA and tell me how long the obligations survive after termination. Quote the clause."

  • "Search my August documents for 'governing law' and tell me which jurisdiction each agreement uses, with citations."

  • "Ask August to summarize each party's main obligations under the services agreement, and list three points a reviewing attorney should check."

  • "Show me my saved August agents, run the agent, and tell me when it's done."

Permissions and data handling

  • Your own account. You sign in with your own August account through OAuth. Claude never sees your August password.

  • Same access as in August. The connector follows your existing August permissions. Claude can only reach the projects, folders and documents your August account can access, and can only make changes your account is allowed to make.

  • What August receives. August receives only the requests Claude sends to its tools (for example, a search term, a question, or a document to open). The connector does not read your Claude chat history, memory or files.

  • What Claude receives. When a tool runs, the results (such as document text, search results or answers) are returned to Claude and become part of your Claude conversation. Anthropic's terms and your Claude plan's settings govern how Claude handles that conversation.

  • No ads. The connector does not include sponsored content or advertising.

  • Security. August holds ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II. See the August Trust Center for details.

  • Privacy. See the August Privacy Policy and the Data Processing Addendum.

August and Claude can make mistakes, miss relevant provisions, or misread documents. Everything they produce is a draft to support a qualified legal professional. A licensed attorney must review it before anyone relies on it, sends it to a client or counterparty, or files it. Do not use this connector as a substitute for professional legal judgment. Using the connector does not create an attorney-client relationship with August.

How to disconnect or revoke access

  • In Claude: open your connector settings, select August, and choose Disconnect (or remove the connector). Claude stops calling August immediately.

  • Per chat: you can turn August off for an individual conversation without disconnecting it.

  • Disconnecting does not delete anything in your August account. Content that was already returned to Claude stays in those Claude conversations until you delete them in Claude.

Troubleshooting

The sign-in keeps looping or doesn't finish.

  • Make sure pop-ups are allowed for claude.ai, and finish the August sign-in in the window that opens.

  • Sign in with the August account that has an active, paid subscription.

  • Disconnect August in Claude, then connect again.

Claude says it can't find any projects.

  • Check that you're signed in to the right August account. Claude sees only what that account can see in August.

  • Confirm in app.august.law that you're a member of the project. If not, ask the project owner or your August admin for access.

  • Ask Claude to list your projects first, then name the project you want to work in.

A question takes a long time or Claude says there's no answer yet.

  • August answers legal questions in the background. Larger questions across many documents can take a while.

  • Ask Claude to check the status of the question again, or to fetch the result once it's finished.

  • You can also open the chat in August at app.august.law to see the answer.

Claude asked me to confirm an action.

  • That's expected for any tool that changes data in August. Read the details, then approve or decline.
