August API
August exposes a public REST API at https://app.august.law/api/v1. Requests and responses use plain JSON, so you can build on August from any HTTP client.
The OpenAPI specification is published at https://app.august.law/api/v1/openapi.json. It is OpenAPI 3.1, titled "August Public API", and readable without authentication. Load it into any OpenAPI viewer (Swagger UI, Redoc, Scalar), Postman, or a client generator to explore every endpoint. The spec's servers URL matches the host that served it, so generated clients target the right host automatically.
Authentication
Every request sends an August API key as a bearer token:
Authorization: Bearer ak_...Create keys in August account settings > API Keys. Keys start with ak_ and must be scoped to a user; organization-scoped keys are rejected with the error API key must be scoped to a user, not an organization. Calls act as that user and see only what that user can access in August. A missing or invalid key returns HTTP 401 with a JSON body like {"message":"UNAUTHORIZED","code":"UNAUTHORIZED"}.
Treat API keys as secrets. If a key is exposed, revoke it and create a new one.

Read the OpenAPI specification for the full list of endpoints and their parameters: August updates the API over time, and the spec always reflects the latest state. Load it into a viewer or client generator and work from there rather than a static list.

Long-running operations
Chat queries and agent runs are asynchronous: the initial request returns an ID immediately, and you poll the status or run endpoint until the result is ready. Chat queries can also be cancelled. The specification shows the exact operations for starting, polling, fetching results, and cancelling.
Using August from an AI client
The same public operations are also exposed as MCP tools at /api/mcp, so an MCP client can call August directly. See August MCP.
