Project Memories

Memories are short notes August keeps between chats: established case details, key dates, decisions, document conventions, and standing instructions for how you or your team want August to work. August brings them into every chat and agent run, so you don't have to repeat yourself.

What a Memory Is

A memory is a short, self-contained statement, not a running transcript. It records things worth remembering across sessions: a matter's key parties and dates, a decision your team made, or a convention this project's documents follow. A Reference memory on the Project tab can link back to the source documents it came from, so you can open the file that supports it.

Each memory is one of two kinds, shown as How August uses it when you add or edit one:

Always applied: rules and preferences August follows in every chat, such as instructions, corrections, and how you work.
Reference: facts August looks up when they're relevant, such as parties, dates, amounts, decisions, and conventions.

Where Memories Live

Open a project's Memories page from the project's overflow (…) menu in the sidebar, or from the project's settings. The page has two tabs:

Project: what August remembers about this project. Shared with everyone on the project.
Personal: what August remembers about you. These notes follow you into every project and are private to you.

Your personal workspace has a Memories page too, from its overflow (…) menu in the sidebar. It shows your personal memories only. Use Search memories at the top of the page to find a note.

How Memories Get Created

By August as you work: While you chat or run agents, August proposes notes worth keeping, for example a confirmed closing date or a preference you stated. By default, August asks you to confirm each save in the chat. To let it save without asking, set Memory to Allow under My profile > Chat Features, or choose Block to stop it saving memories at all.
By you: Click Add memory on the Memories page, fill in the Summary and Details, and choose how August uses it.
From project setup: Anything you enter in the Matter Intelligence field when you create a project is saved as the project's standing instructions, an Always applied memory you can edit later on the Memories page.

When August asks in the chat, the card shows the proposed note. Choose Save note or Don't save for a new note, Apply edit or Keep as is for a change, and Delete note or Keep note for a removal. August always asks before it deletes a memory, even when Memory is set to Allow.

Agent runs that run on their own, such as scheduled runs, have no one to ask, so they save memories without a card. They can't delete memories or change ones you wrote or edited.

Editing and Removing Memories

Project editors and above can edit or delete project memories; viewers can read them. You can always edit or delete your own personal memories.

Editing a memory always marks it as user-asserted, even if August originally wrote it, so it reflects your judgment and takes priority over notes August wrote on its own. Deleting a memory removes it from the list; August keeps an archived copy rather than erasing it.

The Summary can be up to 300 characters and the Details up to 5,000 characters. A counter under each field turns red when you reach the limit.

How Memories Are Used

Always applied memories load in full into every chat and agent run in the project. August sees a list of Reference memories and reads the ones a task needs. There's no per-memory switch to turn one off temporarily: if a memory is wrong or outdated, edit or delete it rather than trying to override it in a single conversation.
