Brazil Legal Research with August

August supports legal research grounded in Brazilian law. For organizations configured with Brazil jurisdiction, August grounds legal analysis, drafting, and advice in Brazilian law by default: the Constitution, the Civil Code, Lei das Sociedades Anônimas (Law 6.404/76), the LGPD, the CLT, and the surrounding regulatory framework. If your firm has Brazilian legal research enabled, you can also limit research to the official Brazilian sources listed below.

Who This Applies To

This behavior applies when your organization is tagged with jurisdiction = BR. If your organization is not configured for Brazil jurisdiction, your research queries follow standard routing.

Contact your firm administrator or August support if you're unsure whether your organization is configured for Brazil jurisdiction.

What Changes for Brazil Organizations

  • Brazilian law by default. Ambiguous legal-research queries are grounded in Brazilian statutes, regulations, and jurisprudence; non-Brazilian legal concepts are flagged as outside the jurisdiction when they come up unprompted.

  • Official sources. Legal-research queries in Assistant can search the curated Brazilian government and court sources below.

Choose Research Sources

Pick which Brazilian sources August searches for a chat. Every source starts switched on.

  1. In the composer, open Research and choose Legal Research.

  2. Expand Brazil and switch individual sources on or off.

Until you limit the selection, August can also search the open web. Once you limit it, research stays within the sources you selected unless you turn on Web Research in the same dialog.

Legislation and gazettes

  • Palácio do Planalto: consolidated federal legislation, including the Constitution, codes, statutes, and decrees

  • LexML Brasil: unified national index of legislation and case law across all levels of government

  • Normas do Congresso Nacional: the National Congress consolidated norms portal

  • Diário Oficial da União (DOU): the official federal gazette of record for laws, decrees, and normative acts

  • Câmara dos Deputados and Senado Federal: bills, legislative history, and enacted-norm texts

Courts and case law

  • Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF): constitutional rulings, súmulas vinculantes, and full decisions

  • Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ): federal-law precedent, súmulas, and repetitive-appeal theses

  • Tribunal Superior do Trabalho (TST): labor-law precedent, súmulas, and orientações jurisprudenciais

  • Tribunais Regionais do Trabalho: regional labor-court jurisprudence through the Falcão search

  • Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) and Superior Tribunal Militar (STM)

  • Tribunais Regionais Federais: federal appellate jurisprudence from all six regions (TRF1 to TRF6)

  • State courts: TJSP, TJRJ, and TJMG, plus TJRS, TJDFT, TJSC, TJPR, TJPE, and TJBA

Coverage Notes

Some federal regulators publish only on shared gov.br agency pages that cannot be isolated as dedicated research sources. ANVISA, ANEEL, SUSEP, ANS, and ANP are currently in that group. August can still research these agencies through general web research and through the DOU, where their normative acts are published, but they are not part of the official-source list.

When to Specify Jurisdiction Explicitly

  • Comparative research: "Compare merger-control thresholds in Brazil and the EU."

  • Cross-border matters: "What are the tax implications for a Brazilian company acquiring a Delaware target?"

  • Confirming scope: "Under the CLT, when can an employer terminate for cause?"
