Document Management

Translation Languages

August translates documents to support multilingual legal work. This article covers supported languages, format compatibility, and special handling for beta languages like Marathi.

Supported Target Languages

August supports translation to multiple target languages. When requesting translation, specify the target language using the appropriate language code.

Language Codes

Code

Language

EN-US

English (US)

EN-GB

English (UK)

PT-BR

Portuguese (Brazil)

PT-PT

Portuguese (Portugal)

ZH-HANS

Chinese (Simplified)

ZH-TW

Chinese (Traditional)

For language families with regional variants, specify the exact variant. For example, use EN-US for American English and EN-GB for British English rather than a generic English code.

Beta Languages

Some languages are available as beta support, meaning translation quality may not match fully-supported languages. Beta languages have additional notices and download options.

Marathi (MR)

Marathi is currently in beta. When translating documents to Marathi:

  • Beta banner: You will see a beta banner indicating that translation quality may be suboptimal compared to other languages.

  • Text-file download: For Marathi translations, a text-file download option may be provided alongside the standard output formats.

  • Sandbox processing: Marathi documents use a dedicated sandbox translation path designed to improve handling of the language's specific characteristics.

Beta language support is actively improving. If you encounter quality issues with Marathi translation, provide feedback so the translation model can be refined.

Supported Document Formats

Translation works with common legal document formats:

  • Word documents: .docx, .doc

  • Presentations: .pptx

  • Spreadsheets: .xlsx

  • PDF: .pdf

  • Web formats: .htm, .html

  • Text files: .txt

  • Translation formats: .xlf, .xliff, .srt

Documents outside these formats may not be eligible for translation.

How Translation Works

When you request document translation:

  1. Submit documents: Attach the documents you want to translate and specify the target language.

  2. Processing: Translation runs in the background. You can continue working while documents are being translated.

  3. Output delivery: Translated documents appear in your workspace when ready. You receive a notification when translation completes.

For documents attached to a chat, translated files are accessible to all chat members. Standalone translations are only accessible to the user who created them.

Auto-Detection of Source Language

You do not need to specify the source language when requesting translation. August automatically detects the source language from the document content. Simply omit the source language parameter and the system will determine it.

Troubleshooting

No documents provided for translation

Attach documents to your request before asking for translation. The translation tool requires source documents to process.

No valid documents to translate

The attached files may not be in a supported format. Check that your documents are in one of the supported formats listed above.

Translation unavailable for this language pair

The requested translation may not be supported. Try a different target language or check that you are using the correct language code.

Best Practices

  • Use shared chats for team translations: Translations created in a shared chat are automatically accessible to all chat members for collaborative review.

  • Verify beta language output: For Marathi and other beta languages, review the translated output carefully and compare with source text when precision is critical.

  • Specify regional variants: For English, Portuguese, and Chinese, use the specific regional code to match your target audience.
