Playbooks Evaluation in the Word Add-In

Run a Playbook against the document open in Word from the Playbooks tab of the August sidebar. August checks the document against each rule, shows a verdict with its reasoning and supporting paragraphs, and drafts edits on request for rules that fall short.

You need the Word Add-in installed and a Playbook with at least one rule. To create or edit Playbooks, see Playbooks Overview.

Run a Playbook

Each run evaluates the document from the point of view of the party you represent.

In the August sidebar, open the Playbooks tab.
Find your Playbook (use Search playbooks... if the list is long) and click it.
In Representing party, enter the party you act for, for example "Acme Corporation".
Optionally, add Additional notes for this run (up to 1,500 characters).
Click Run.

A progress bar shows how many rules have been reviewed. Verdicts appear rule by rule as they finish. The run keeps going if you switch to another tab, and it resumes if you reload the sidebar while the same document is open.

Steer the Run With Additional Notes

Additional notes apply to one run only and are not saved to the Playbook. Use them for deal context, client preferences, or to tell August which position to check against, for example "use fallback 1 for rules 1-5". By default, each rule is checked against its starting position.

Understand the Verdicts

Click a rule to expand its verdict, the reasoning behind it, and the paragraphs it relies on.

Verdict	Meaning
Meets starting position	The document satisfies your preferred position for this rule.
Meets a fallback	The document satisfies one of your fallback positions but not the starting position. The verdict names which fallback.
Not acceptable	The document fails the rule, or contains language the rule marks as not acceptable.
Not applicable	The document itself shows that the rule doesn't apply to it.

Click Evidence 1, Evidence 2, and so on to select the supporting paragraph in your document. If the document changed since the run, a paragraph may no longer be found. A rule marked Failed couldn't be evaluated; run the Playbook again.

Draft and Apply Edits

August drafts edits only when you ask, and only for rules marked Meets a fallback or Not acceptable. Edits aim at the position the rule was checked against.

Expand a rule and click Suggest edits, or click Suggest all above the rule list to draft edits for every eligible rule.
When drafting finishes, click the review button on the rule, for example Review 3 suggested edits. August checks the edits against the current document and shows them as review cards.
On each card, choose Redline (tracked change) or Direct, then click Apply or Dismiss. Apply all applies every pending card for the rule.

If August finds no change is needed for a rule, it says so instead of showing cards. These are the same review cards used in chat; see Edit Documents with the Word Add-In.

Run Again or Pick Another Playbook

Click Run again at the top of the run to evaluate the document again, for example after applying edits. The Run playbook window opens so you can confirm the representing party and notes. Click the back arrow to return to your list of Playbooks.

Troubleshooting

A Playbook in the list can't be run

Playbooks without rules can't be run. Add at least one rule in the Playbook editor in the August web app, then try again.

Drafting edits for a rule failed

Click Retry on the rule.

"Reconnect to Word to review these edits"

The sidebar lost its connection to the document. Reload the sidebar with the same document open, then click the rule's review button again.

"The connection to the evaluation was lost"

Reload the sidebar to catch up. The run continues on our servers and its results reappear when the same document is open.

"This evaluation is no longer available"

The saved run expired. Run the Playbook again.
